Sugar-Free doesn't mean bland! This Spiced Chai is sweetened with Xylitol and Stevia. Xylitol has been used as a sweetener in sugar free gums for years. With 40% fewer calories than sugar and a lower glycemic index, it is a good choice for those wanting to avoid spiking blood sugars. Stevia is a South American herb that has been used as a natural sweetener for centuries. The leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant have a refreshing taste, zero calories and zero carbs. "Surprise! 5 Sparrows Monumental Sugar Free Chai is actually sweeter tasting than their standard version. This is due to the inclusion of two natural sweeteners: Stevia and Xylitol. Although 5 Sparrows give Stevia title banner status, the ingredients actually show Xylitol is the first listed (the largest amount by weight). For the uninitiated, Xylitol is a natural, plant derived substance that looks and tastes very similar to sugar but has less than 1/2 of the calories of sugar. It is also absorbed more slowly than sugar, thereby tending not to impact blood sugar levels the way sugar does. Furthermore, Xylitol does not promote tooth decay. For that reason, is used in some sugar free chewing gums. Why isn't Xylitol the natural sugar substitute of choice? For one thing, it's more expensive than sugar or artificial sweeteners. But it is an excellent natural alternative.
This chai is in fact now my 1st choice winner, de-throning David Rio Masala Chai! Of course, David Rio Masala is still great chai, but I like the richness and depth here, and I'll take Xylitol over sugar any day."
